Printed Flexible Sensors for the IoT
The profound transformation for intelligent systems associated with the IoT revolution aims toward the deployment of ubiquitous sensors. These new paradigms require advanced manufacturing techniques in order to achieve such low-cost flexibles sensors. At INO, the fabrication of flexible multilayered sensors has been addressed through state-of-the-art printing equipment combining inkjet and aerosol technologies with in-situ IR and UV post-treatment, and including pulsed-shaping laser curing/sintering capabilities.
Specific fabrication strategies have been used to carefully control deposition of multilayers from a broad range of functional inks on a wide variety of stretchable and flexible substrates, necessary for adequate sensor prototyping. Numerous sensors prototypes from thermistor arrays to photodetectors and transparent electrodes for human-machine interfaces have been printed in a digital fashion on polyimides and polyester substrates. The definition of critical feature dimensions of ~20μm width and ~10μm gap has also been achieved, which provides the limitation of design rules necessary to control the fabrication process towards future industrial scale-up manufacturing for the IoT.
