OTTAWA— Sept. 13, 2016—The Canadian Printable Electronics Industry Association (www.cpeia-acei.ca) has welcomed to its membership EMD Performance Materials Corp. (www.emd-performance-materials.com), a global leader in liquid crystal mixtures for next-generation technologies such as flexible displays and printed photovoltaics.

EMD Performance Materials comprises the entire specialty chemicals business of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany. The portfolio includes high-tech performance chemicals for applications in fields such as Displays, Integrated Circuits, Lighting Applications, Solar and Energy, Cosmetics, Food and Pharmaceuticals, Coatings, and Printing and Plastics.

The company has established itself as the global market and technology leader in liquid crystal mixtures. It has the broadest product offering in the industry, meeting individual customer needs and offering solutions for all display sizes, from smartphones and tablet computers to large-size television screens. EMD’s portfolio also comprises materials that are used in integrated circuits, printable organic electronics and hybrid electronics. It also works in the OLED materials space for display and lighting applications.

Furthermore, EMD develops and markets a comprehensive product portfolio of decorative effect pigments and functional materials. These pigments are primarily used in automotive and industrial coatings, plastics, printing applications, and cosmetics to give products a unique shine.

Looking to partner on future tech … today

EMD is open to working with SMEs interested in developing applications using its LCD mixtures, and any company or university for proof of concept and prototyping, to commercialize new materials for printable, flexible and hybrid printable electronics.

Take, for example, EMD’s organic photovoltaics – flexible printed solar panels that are efficient, long-lived and a source of inspiration for architects the world over, such as the solar trees at last year’s Expo Milano in Italy.

Or new flexible LCD displays made entirely of plastic. By using organic transistors on a plastic sheet, these LCDs have the potential to make products 10 times thinner, more than 10 times lighter, and cheaper than conventional glass-based displays, while being shatterproof and able to conform to different shapes.
