OTTAWA— Jan. 31, 2017—The Canadian Printable Electronics Industry Association (www.cpeia-acei.ca) continues to build linkages across Canada’s printable and flexible electronics ecosystem with the addition of a smart packaging startup and a research-driven university eager to partner with industry.

CuePath Innovation

CuePath Innovation (http://www.cuepath.io) enables families and care professionals to remotely track medication intake by their loved ones and patients who take many pill doses throughout the day. The solution alleviates the stress associated with caregiving for families, and allows care professionals to offer medication reminder services more efficiently.

CuePath’s solution combines printed electronic sensors with widely-used blister pack medication packaging that does not require patients and caregivers to learn new technology. There is no need to re-fill pill boxes on a weekly basis, or to configure Wi-Fi services at home. This smart packaging solution transmits information to remote caregivers through a cellular gateway and mobile app. An embedded alarm provides reminders to the patient to take the appropriate medication at the right time. The end result is improved quality of life and greater independence for senior patients, peace of mind for their family caregivers, and increased customer attraction and loyalty for pharmacies offering CuePath’s product. For retirement communities and professional care providers, this solution would assist in generating increased revenues from additional nursing services.

As a CPEIA Member, CuePath is looking to partner with packaging companies in manufacturing the product, and also in developing a fully integrated solution for retirement communities, pharmacies, home care providers and pharmaceutical companies. After taking its technology through beta stage, CuePath is getting ready to scale up its manufacturing capability for printed sensors with a suitable technology partner. Ultimately, CuePath’s goal is to bridge the gap between care providers, the pharmaceutical industry, and patients through smart medication packaging.

McMaster University

Consistently ranked among the Top 100 universities in the world, McMaster University (www.mcmaster.ca) is renowned for its innovation in both learning and discovery.  The institution’s Faculty of Engineering is known for its leading-edge educational programming, its research, and its engagement with industry and community.

Established in 1958, McMaster’s institutes, centres and laboratories have collaborated on numerous research projects with the public and private sectors. It is always looking for partners to tackle the big questions – like how to make printed electronics viable, affordable and ubiquitous. McMaster’s faculty and students take on research challenges covering all length scales, from designing polymers and molecules atom by atom, to exploring nanoparticle decoration of interfaces, to printing optoelectronic devices and sensors, and designing and building integrated systems.

Linking with industry and government not only enables its world-class researchers to foster collaborative growth, but it also provides students with an opportunity to cultivate in-demand skills, stay abreast of industry needs and train for tomorrow.

“CuePath and McMaster demonstrate the vast opportunity Canada has to become a force in the global printable and flexible electronics sector,” said Mark Majewski, President and CEO of the CPEIA. “We have the right combination of enterprising industrial companies and academic researchers who understand the value of working collaboratively to overcome the challenges of bringing new technology to market.”
