Canadian players rock industry’s leading trade show

By Leo Valiquette

Canada took centre stage at IDTechEx’s Printed Electronics USA show two weeks ago, showcasing the strength of its growing ecosystem for printable, wearable and flexible electronics (PE).

The anchor was an impressive 1,600-square-foot Team Canada Pavilion, the largest on the exhibition floor.

A huge circular banner with maple leaf branding made the Pavilion visible from every part of the exhibition floor. Pre-show promotion and placement in the event program made it a “can’t be missed" exhibit. The Pavilion featured 10 Canadian organizations, representing a cross-section of the entire eco-system, with materials, device manufacturers and application developers in printables, flexibles and wearables.

Myant teams with Danish wearable health sensor startup

Myant Capital Partners, parent company of CPEIA Member Myant & Co., has invested $1.6 million in Danish startup Cortrium.

Cortrium is developing wearable health sensors designed for both in-patient and home health monitoring. The C3 sensor can measure heart function, respiratory rate, skin surface temperature, heart rate recovery, sleep analysis, physical activity level and motion. The sensors transmit the data via Bluetooth for review by physicians.

Myant is focused on the design, development and manufacturing of wearable technology, and integrating and embedding technology seamlessly into textiles.

Pharma packaging industry under pressure to innovate

In 2016 and 2017, new regulatory requirements will come into effect for prescription drug products that impact how they are labelled and tracked. One is the requirement for a new serial identification code mandated under the American Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA). The other is a new traceability requirement under the EU’s Falsified Medicines Directive.

The new regulations go far beyond printing a few more attributes on a label. The core concept is to develop and maintain a tracking system from manufacturing through to sales with 100 per cent accuracy.

According to one leading analyst quoted by our European association partner, the Active and Intelligent Packaging Industry Association (AIPIA), these requirements represent a collective call to action for the entire pharmaceutical supply chain to adopt more active and intelligent packaging solutions “to deal with the traceability requirements of today and the authentication and compliance issues just around the corner.”

Read more about it in the AIPIA’s recent press release, as well as learn more about the DSCSA and the Falsified Medicines Directive.

Did you miss our conductive inks webinar with IDTechEx?

This Nov. 10. webinar, part of our Technical Program, featured some great insight from IDTechEx’s Khasha Ghaffarzadeh.

Khasha discussed the technologies and markets for conductive inks. He focused on how existing applications such as touch screens are changing fast, as well as new markets such as wearable/stretchable inks, in-mold inks, 3D printing of electronics, digitizers, OLED lighting, and novel transparent conductive films.

CPEIA Members can access the slide deck and the webinar recording in the CPEIA Knowledge Base.

Our Technical Webinar series explores the technologies vital to the commercialization of new products and applications enabled with printable, organic or flexible electronics across industry verticals. Stay tuned for announcements regarding our 2016 webinars.
